Directly Supervises: Executive & Internal Communications Specialist; Editor/Content Developer – Internal Communications; Multi-media Design Specialist; Content Developer – Medical School Campuses
Co-supervises: Manager of Communications Resources
 
 
POSITION PURPOSE
The Director of Executive and Internal Communications (DEIC) is responsible for facilitating, developing and executing the executive and internal communications strategy for the Medical College of Wisconsin in support of the institution’s mission, culture, processes and strategic initiatives.  The DEIC plays a pivotal role in helping MCW enhance its communications aptitude, tools and engagement, strengthen the conversation between leadership and employees, and successfully move the institution through change. The DEIC ensures that executive and internal communications inform, educate, motivate and engage faculty and staff.  Implementation of the DEIC’s executive and internal communications strategies helps top executives develop and maintain a positive image and relationship with employees and students. 
 
 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.      Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for all internal and executive communications which complements external and digital communications plans that collectively link to an overarching communications plan aligning with MCW’s mission, strategies and culture.
2.      Responsible for building an effective strategic internal/employee communications program that grows internal passion for MCW, supports MCW’s overall brand, goals and objectives, and strengthens MCW’s corporate culture.
3.      Provides strategic and tactical communications support to MCW’s executive and senior leaders to help convey the vision, progress and current state of affairs for the institution in a consistent, compelling, and transparent way – to both internal and external audiences and stakeholders. 
4.      Ensures executive and internal communications are written for engagement and aligned with institutional goals and external messages, and that appropriate communication channels are leveraged to disseminate messages effectively.
5.      Manages communication projects and initiatives effectively, ensuring consistency in voice and message and utilizing a variety of channels in order to achieve communication objectives/results.
6.      Implements plans to ensure that internal messaging is appropriate, consistent and inspiring to employees.
7.      Influences results through appropriate staffing and budgetary management – removing performance barriers and maximizing available resources.
8.      Closely monitors the pulse of the institution and ensures that communication efforts are building trust throughout MCW.
9.      Works to develop new and innovative approaches for communicating throughout MCW including the intranet, social media and other creative communication channels.
10.  Develops new communication vehicles to enhance transparency of information to all employees.
11.  Develops messages, content, channels, and materials to support executive and internal communications strategy.
12.  Partners with Director of External Relations and Director of Digital Communications to ensure consistency in internal and external messaging, branding, and priorities.
13.  Partners with other senior leaders across MCW (including Academic Affairs, Human Resources, IT, Strategic Outreach, Development, etc.) to help craft timely, relevant,  informative and engaging communications related to each of those specific areas.
 
14.  Develops feedback mechanisms and work to continuously improve the effectiveness of MCW’s communication processes and products.
 
15.  Keeps current with the executive and internal communication best practices and determines applicability and feasibility for MCW.
16.  Participates in and supports other key business projects as required.
17.  Translates institutional direction into specific team and individual contributor job expectations and manages performance through effective monitoring, coaching and feedback.
18.  Establishes and maintains a collaborative environment, capitalizing on employee talents, experience and interests to reach high performance.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis
 
Education:                     Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree in communications or related field preferred    
 
Experience:                   8-10 years of experience working directly with senior-level executives in support of strategic communications to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders/audiences
