Department of Public Health

 

Number of Positions: 2

·     Collects, analyzes and interprets HIV-related epidemiological and programmatic data to determine geographic patterns, demographic trends, and risk factors associated with HIV occurring in Chicago using computer software packages such as SAS, Microsoft Access, and ArcGIS

 

·     Works with several large datasets, writes SAS code to clean, edit, and prepare datasets for analysis and drafts documentation that will be made available along with the analysis datasets

 

·     Writes programs or uses various software including SAS to merge datasets, generate complex data summaries, or to perform difficult manipulation of data from relational databases

 

·     Implements data management, data cleaning, and quality control procedures and conducts analyses that support these functions

 

·     Assists in the investigation of HIV cases reported by laboratories by executing computerized routines to generate summaries or reported cases with missing information, runs quality assurance reports, activity summaries, and maps

 

·     Coordinates completion of data requests made by internal collaborators and external stakeholders and partners

 

·     Assists senior staff in the analysis of epidemiologic data and the preparation of narrative reports describing the causes of morbidity and mortality

 

·     Locates, organizes and summarizes epidemiologic literature for inclusion in reports or for use as background material on new areas of investigation

 

·     Works with senior staff in analysis of epidemiological and programmatic data to guide program design and evaluation

 

·     Validates the integrity of databases by generating tabular summaries to check for inconsistencies.

 

Performs related duties as required.

Shift:                Monday through Friday

Hours:             8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

 

 

 

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE.

 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics or a related field supplemented by three years of progressively responsible epidemiological experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, provided the minimum degree requirement is met.
 
Disclaimer - "Accredited" means any nationally or regionally accredited college, university, or law school where the applicant is enrolled in or has completed an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Juris Doctorate degree program.

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE:  The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge.  Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented.  In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering "yes" or "no" to the question on the online application that asks, "Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?"  In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service.  For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service.  For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application.  Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview.  The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
