Pain Control Center RN – What does that mean?

 

 

The goal of the pain management team is to give patients an improved quality of life and to allow them to experience an adequate level of comfort.

 

As a nurse in the Pain Control Center, you will work with a Pain Specialist MD and his specially trained staff to understand pain and help our patients to reduce pain issues. The Pain Control Center treats acute and chronic pain with a holistic approach. Specializing in interventional pain medicine procedures, various conditions that are treated may include low back pain, accident-related discomfort, myofascial pain and nerve pain, such as shingles. Treatments may include epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, nerve blocks, trigger point injections, placement of long-term pain pumps and radiofrequency ablation.

 

 

 

The main scope of job:

The RN coordinates and administers nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process which involves:  Assessment of the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.  An individual plan of care will be established in collaboration with the patient and anesthesiologist.  The plan of care will be adjusted with each visit if needed.  The Interventional Pain Clinic Nurse will participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities within the department and the hospital.  The Interventional Pain Clinic Nurse will serve as a role model and resource in Pain Management.  Set up for and assist anesthesiologist with interventional pain management procedures.

 

 

Essential Job Functions:

1.  Assists Anesthesiologist with the gathering of supplies and medications for inpatient/outpatient pain procedures.

2.  Does initial history and pain assessment of patients referred to the Pain Clinic and documents a summary of findings in the patient’s progress notes.              

3.  Collaborates with the Anesthesiologist, the patient, the family, and the nursing staff to plan, implement, and evaluate a therapeutic pain regime.                

4.  Does initial and follow-up patient teaching about pain procedures and infusion care.

5.  Complies with strict standards of practice which provide legal responsibility for the safety of patients.

6.  Evaluates the need for home health referrals and initiates appropriately.

7.  Coordinates activities to allow the best use of staff and anesthesia time and resources.  Works efficiently utilizing good time management skills.

8.  Is responsible for obtaining needed supplies, forms, and accurate charging for pain procedures.

9.  Works effectively with nurses in the Pain Clinic to provide consistent care and patient instruction.

10.  Maintains awareness of research studies in nursing and related fields and applies this information appropriately to patient care.    Participates in pain related research.  Demonstrates initiative in maintaining knowledge of new technology, equipment, and pain management practices.

11.  Initiates and maintains Quality Improvement activities relevant to patient care.

12.  Is available on a daily basis as a clinical resource to nursing staff in the Hospital and community managing pain patients.

 

Requirements for this position:

This is a PRN, casual position.  Depending on department need, you may be scheduled between 0 and 5 days a week.  Scheduled hours will be day shift, Monday through Friday.
