The Health Economic Statistics department positioned within the Merck Research Labs, is responsible for quantifying the economic value of Merck's drugs and vaccines to global payers and other decision makers by developing health economic models and analyzing data from randomized clinical trials.
The Senior Scientist will serve on one or more interdisciplinary teams to address the outcomes research needs for the product(s). In support of that team, the scientist will be responsible for synthesizing and developing evidence on the health and economic value of our product.
With guidance from a departmental mentor, responsibilities will include and are not limited to the following:
- Review and synthesize literature on prior health economic evaluations relevant for the disease target
- As a member of a team of researchers, lead in the design, development and validation of health economic models to assess the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of drugs and vaccines
- Collaborate with country subsidiaries to adapt the economic models to support national, regional and/or local reimbursement submissions and market access needs
- Assess the opportunity to conduct economic evaluations as part of the clinical development program. When appropriate, collaborate with the clinical research team to incorporate measures in the trial and lead the writing and execution of the health economic data analysis plan
- Review health economic models developed outside the department and provide technical advice, if needed, to address methodologic concerns
- Independently identify and pursue solutions to methodological issues arising in the conduct and analysis of economic studies
- Prepare oral presentations and written reports to communicate results of economic evaluations (based on clinical studies or health economic models) and solutions to methodological issues
- Experienced individuals may also have an opportunity to establish departmental priorities across the product portfolio within a broad therapeutic area.
Education:

Required: Ph.D. degree in Economics, Health Economics, Health Services Research, Operations Research, Statistics or closely related discipline
Required Experience:

Demonstrated experience conducting independent research

Experience designing and developing ahealth economic or decision analytic model

Evidence/experience working collaboratively on a research team, and advanced knowledge in at least one model-building software language (e.g., TreeAge, Excel Visual Basic, ARENA, @RISK, R, Mathematica)Effective oral and written communication skills
- 5% Travel
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in conducting research with observational databases
- Experience with scientific and software development programming
- Strong quantitative coursework
