POSITION PURPOSE
Advanced Practice Nurse
Provides primary or specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. |
Department Position Purpose
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team. The APP functions as an intensivist within the 3NT intensive care unit and manages all aspects of the assigned patient's intensive care stay from admission to transfer. The APP has a strong foundation in evidenced based practice and ensures an environment of safe quality care. The APP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, solid clinical decision making and critical thinking skills, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for personal and professional development and competency validation. |
Physician Assistant
Provides primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. |
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams and identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
5. Educates patients and families on injuries and treatment plans.
6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Department Specific Responsibilities
1. Attends daily rounds with the Attending Intensivist Physician team, presents 24 hour patient report.
2. Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of critically ill, multisystem failure patients.
3. Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and admission and transfer orders.
4. Performs advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation, including but not limited to minor suturing, complex wound management, line and tube placements and removal, ultrasound guided evaluations/procedures and ventilator management
5. Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the inpatient continuum of care. Participates in family meetings.
6. Acts as liaison for communication of care plans and discharge destinations from ICU to floor teams.

Education Requirements
Advanced Practice Nurse
Master’s Degree (appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis) |
Physician Assistant
Will consider a Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies if candidate has prior experience in this environment.
Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. |
