These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the Water Pipe Engineering Laborers - Local 1092 (Bargaining Unit 53)

Under immediate supervision, performs physically demanding labor duties at the City of Chicago Salvage Auction facility with storage and distribution operations for the intake, receipt, and distribution of large and heavy items including construction materials and equipment, furniture and office equipment, building materials, and salvage yards for automotive and vehicle equipment

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

• Perform heavy lifting and other laborer tasks to assist with the unloading of trucks and trailers delivering items such as construction materials and equipment, building maintenance and repair materials, furniture and office equipment, and other large and heavy items
• Operates forklifts/ski steer to move, store and distribute vehicles, large/heavy scrap and other materials and equipment maintained for auction at the City's facility
• Fills order requests by directing and assisting internal/external customers in locating and loading/unloading requested items and materials from the site
• Maintains inventory of vehicles, scrap, supplies and equipment and related housing and janitorial items used, stored, sold and used at the Salvage Auction Yard
• Performs intake and inventory activities of surplus city vehicles, equipment and scrap materials for the storage and distribution of materials, scrap and equipment at the City's Salvage Yard
• Weighs delivered scrap materials and issues weight tickets to customers and contractors delivering/picking up scrap materials
• Assists in preparing city vehicles and equipment for auction, ensuring proper documents are presented for the release of purchased surplus items from the salvage yard
• Enters data from orders filled into a computerized system to track materials and items removed from stock and current inventory levels
• Uses a computer to maintain records and track the ordering and receipt of materials and equipment from vendors; uses a digital camera to photograph items for posting on the auction website
• Responds to the public’s inquiries, in-person and by phone, regarding Dept of Procurement online auctions and scrap material programs
• Conducts periodic physical counts of inventory
• Maintains the cleanliness of the storage facilities and salvage yard areas, and follows safety procedures to keep areas clear and free of clutter to prevent accidents
• Performs snow removal as needed
• Controls access to security gates and ensures no unauthorized persons are on the premises

Hours:       7:00am – 3:30pm

Assignments involving the operation of a forklift will require positions to be trained and evaluated by the employer prior to the assignment, as required under OSHA standards administered by the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL)

 

Selection Requirement:

This position is willing and able.  Applicants who successfully apply for the position will be hired in seniority or lottery/random order

 

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE:  The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge.  Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented.  In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?”  In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service.  For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service.  For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application.  Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

 

Evaluation:  Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application.  Applications must be submitted by the individual applicant.  No second party applicants will be accepted.

 

Residency Requirement: An employee must be an actual resident of the City of Chicago.  Proof of residency will be required at the time of employment.
