The Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. Position Overview:
As a postdoctoral research fellow in Merck’s Discovery Chemistry department you will work with a highly collaborative team of scientists from the Medicinal Chemistry, Automation, Catalysis and In Vitro Pharmacology groups. You will work in a creative environment at the forefront of technology enabled synthesis to discover and develop new synthetic routes to biologically relevant small molecules. Experimental design will include miniaturized parallel synthesis, chemistry automation and in-line measurement of biological activity.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading the development and implementation of techniques to couple miniaturized parallel synthesis to in-line biochemical analysis.
- Designing and implementing synthetic routes to complex small molecules.
- Executing high-throughput experimentation chemistry techniques to develop parallel synthetic routes to biologically relevant small molecules.
- Leveraging high-throughput mass spectrometry and other state of the art analytical tools at the interface of chemistry and biology.
- Utilizing advanced lab automation hardware and software tools in pursuit of these goals.
Education Minimum Requirement:

PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or PhD in Analytical Chemistry with a background in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Required Experience and Skills:
-
PhD, or met all the requirements for a PhD by June 2015, with 3 years or less postdoctoral experience

Experience in synthetic method development or total synthesis.

Experience with modern analytical techniques in a chemical or biochemical setting.

Proven ability to independently design experiments, interpret data and incorporate data into new experimental designs leading to successful experimental outcomes.

Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Experience and Skills:

Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals

Demonstrated aptitude for learning new software platforms, analytical instrumentation or liquid handling robotics

Demonstrated aptitude with new technologies
