Job Title: Physician Assistant Surgical or Nurse Practitioner Surgical

Department: Surgery

Location: Multiple Hospitals                                         

Workweek: 7am-5pm plus call time evenings and weekends

POSITION PURPOSE

 

Advanced Practice Nurse

Provide specialty health care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

Department Purpose

Works with multiple cardiothoracic faculty and staff and collaborates with an interdisciplinary health care team in diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring operative and/or procedural management of cardiothoracic nature- inclusive of advanced heart failure and heart/lung transplantation across the continuum of care.

 

 

Physician Assistant

Provide specialty health care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.

2.      Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.

3.      Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.

4.      Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.

5.      Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.

      6.      Performs procedures as trained and

            appropriately credentialed.

7.      Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.

8.      Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.

9.      Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

 

1. Evaluate patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by state statute in the operating room, inpatient, outpatient, and diagnostic lab setting.

2. The majority of care will be first assisting CT surgeons in surgery and management of cardiothoracic surgical patients.

 3. Privileges required include but are not limited to the following:

a. Placing arterial lines, central venous lines, Swan Ganz catheters and chest tubes;

b. Endotracheal tubes

c. Inserting arterial catheters

d. Insertion of intraortic balloon pump

e. Endoscopic vein harvesting

2. Provide after-hours patient care and on-call coverage to include patient rounds and performing procedures when called to the hospital for emergency services. Call time is estimated to be a minimum of 1 night in 6 to increased time if needed due to vacation coverage, etc. in addition to weekend call.

3. May provide services at multiple hospitals based on the location of the clinical practice. 

4. Acquire information on the most current developments and trends in the Advanced Practice Provider Field (PA or NP as appropriate), through educational programs, in-services, professional associations and literature

 

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education Requirements

Advanced Practice Nurse

Master's Degree as APNP

Physician Assistant

Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, Master's Degree preferred.

 

Experience                                                                

·         2 years of CT surgery experience preferred

 

Certifications/Licenses

Advanced Practice Nurse

·         Wisconsin RN License

·         Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License

·         Certification as Advance Practice Nurse

·         CPR certification

·         ACLS certification

·         DEA

·         For NP candidates: Preferred certification is acute care

·         Will consider family or adult nurse practitioner certification

·         Completes mechanical device training; initial (within 30 days of hire) and annually thereafter.

Physician Assistant

·         Wisconsin PA license

·         Certification by NCCPA

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Manual Dexterity:        Work requires accuracy and moderate speed.

Physical Effort:             Work requires considerable variety of fairly steady active physical exertion with some and/or continuous standing or walking.                                                                   

Working Conditions:     May include exposure to conditions requiring the use of personal protective equipment.       

Hazards:                         Exposure to hazards that may result in short-term work-related absences.  Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and hazardous materials.
