POSITION IDENTIFICATION

Job Title:
Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Department: Pediatrics
Division: Emergency Medicine
Location: Emergency Department/Trauma Center; Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin
Workweek: 40 hours/week, clinical schedule of night shifts (9pm to 5am) including weekends and holidays; some flexibility required to meet changing clinical needs

Associate Section Chief/ All Pediatric EM Physicians

POSITION PURPOSE

Advanced Practice Nurse

Provides primary or specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

 

Physician Assistant
Provides primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

 

Department Position Purpose:

Responsible for providing the assessment and care coordination for pediatric emergency patients and families and for assuring high standards and efficient care across the care continuum, participating in quality improvement, education and research.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
5. Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.


Department Specific Responsibilities:


Order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and test and appropriately communicate and document information.

Acquire information on the most current developments and trends in the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant fields in pediatric emergency medicine through educational programs, in-services, professional associations and literature.

Participate in quality improvement activities, research initiatives and/or clinical trials as directed by the pediatric emergency medicine leadership

Perform procedures including suturing, splinting, abscess drainage, child sexual abuse exams and administration of procedural sedation


MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirements


Advanced Practice Nurse
Master's Degree (appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis)


Physician Assistant
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Experience
• Zero years of experienced required
• Preference for one year of pediatric or emergency medicine experience

Certifications/Licenses
(Must be current and maintained)

 

Advanced Practice Nurse
• Wisconsin RN license
• Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
• Certification as Advance Practice Nurse

 

Physician Assistant
• Wisconsin PA license
• Certification by NCCPA

 

Department Specific Certifications/Licenses

• In the case of Physician Assistants, preference for completion of a PA emergency medicine residency
