POSITION PURPOSE

Advanced Practice Nurse
Provide critical care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.


Physician Assistant
Provide critical care services within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

 

Department Position Purpose:

Works with pulmonary and critical care faculty in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team including members of the teaching service.

Position requires a strong clinical competence and critical decision-making and confidence in ability to assess, diagnose, and treat critically ill patients and manage all aspects of care from admission to transfer from the critical care service.



CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
5. Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.


Department-Specific Responsibilities
1. Participates in daily teaching rounds, and presents daily patient information.
2. In collaboration with the intensivist, provides initial and ongoing patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of critically ill patients. Completes daily patient documentation, writes appropriate orders, and provides education to patients and families. Communicates with consulting services, and integrates recommendations into the plan of care. Provides accurate hand-offs to covering providers and during transfer to other services.
3. Performs procedures as indicated. Including, but not limited to: central venous lines, arterial lines, thoracentesis, and paracentesis.
4. Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care. Participates in family meetings.
5. Collaborates and communicates with the multidisciplinary team and teaching service.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirements

 
Advanced Practice Nurse
Master's Degree (appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis)


Physician Assistant
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Experience
• Zero years of experienced required
• Prior critical care experience is desirable.

Certifications/Licenses
(Must be current and maintained)

 

Advanced Practice Nurse
• Wisconsin RN license
• Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
• Certification as Advance Practice Nurse

 

Department Specific Certifications/Licenses

• ACLS
• FCCS Course Completion within first 6 months.
• Certification as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is preferred. Will consider a family or adult certification with relevant experience.

 
Physician Assistant
• Wisconsin PA license
• Certification by NCCPA
