POSITION IDENTIFICATION
Job Title: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Department: Medicine
Division: Hematology & Oncology
Location: Froedtert and MCW Clinical Cancer Center/ Inpatient Units
Workweek: Monday- Friday, 8:00-5:00; with expected Saturday rotations for coverage on BMT Inpatient unit (approximately every six weeks). Scheduling flexibility required to provide for an appropriate level of patient care coverage.

POSITION PURPOSE
Advanced Practice Nurse Provides primary or specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. |
Department Position Purpose Provide professional healthcare to patients in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with policies and procedures. Assist in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of hematology, oncology and blood and marrow transplant patients. The position is primarily inpatient, but could consider a combination of inpatient and outpatient. |
Physician Assistant Provides primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. |
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status. 2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests. 3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans. 4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care. 5. Educates patients on disease and treatment plans. 6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed. 7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents. 8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate. 9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors. |
1. Evaluate patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by state statute and as defined in the collaborative agreement or prescribing guidelines, in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Perform examination of patients, and obtain/document information regarding patient history. 2. May write admission, discharge, transfer, medication and other orders as required for the management of patient care, under the supervision of a physician. 3. Teach, counsel and assist patients and families regarding diet, symptom management, diseases, treatment and follow-up care. 4. Monitor status of hospitalized patients and record daily progress note. May monitor and evaluate follow-up patients in consultation with attending physician. 5. Perform routine therapeutic procedures, including blood and marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy. Assist physician in cell harvesting procedure if necessary. 6. Order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicate and document information. 7. Maintain detailed, legible and confidential medical records in accordance with established protocol. 8. Remain up-to date- on current developments and trends in the professional field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associations and literature. Maintain professional certifications. 9. Participate in quality assurance activities and/or clinical trials, including protocol development, patient eligibility and monitoring. |
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education Requirements
Advanced Practice Nurse Master’s Degree (appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis) |
Physician Assistant Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies |
Experience
· Zero years of experienced required · Five years experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant practitioner preferred with at least 1-2 years in a clinic or hospital environment working with chemotherapy or hematology/oncology patients preferred. |
