At the Merck Manufacturing facility in Elkton, Virginia, we currently have a Senior Specialist - Manufacturing Automation position available at the Stonewall Plant; which is located in the Shenandoah Valley along the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The facility is just a short distance from major state universities:  University of Virginia and James Madison University. 
 
Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for providing technical support in the field of automation.  Responsible for resolution of severe automation problems, implementation of process control, data collection techniques, and troubleshooting in compliance with SDLC, cGMP, safety, and environmental regulations.  Responsible for motivation, training, and interviewing for automation team members.  Incumbent is responsible for the development of objectives and projects and upon approval implements by self or subordinates. The level of performance is reflected by the degree of independent action taken to satisfy the responsibilities of the position.  Also provides technical coverage on automated systems.
 
Primary Activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Understands and supports all cGMPs, safety, and environmental regulations.  Reviews automation documents, preventive maintenance, and SOPs to ensure compliance with cGMP and safety.
  • Develops and supports corrective actions.
  • Communicates periodically with immediate supervisor about status of area of responsibility.
  • Evaluates automated and information technology systems, and develops strategies to optimize and ensure quality and stability of automation systems through future expansion, replacement, or upgrade.
  • Supervises, trains, develops, motivates, and makes assignments for employees being supervised within the framework of company policies.  Coordinates projects with staff group for timely implementation.
  • Uses technical knowledge to assure the efficient operation of variety of automated processing and information technology systems.  Leads in installing and placing new equipment into operations.  Develops solutions for automation problems.  Oversees investigations of automation anomalies to prevent recurrence.
  • Prepares automation cost information to support profit plan. 
  • Participates in audits and training programs in the area of responsibility.
  • Project coordination leadership and implementation of troubleshooting activities and change control.
  • Initiate and lead collaboration within the Operations, Quality and Technical organizations to resolve complex problems.
  • On-floor support of manufacturing activities.
  • Identify and implement process/equipment improvements and manufacturing efficiencies.
  • Maintain technical documentation.
  • Provides client services support for business area applications
