National Heritage Academies is seeking a part-time SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER at Regent Park Scholars Charter Academy located in Detroit, Michigan.

School Leadership: You will be supported by a cohesive leadership team. Our deans avail themselves to provide teachers assistance with lesson plans, classroom management, professional development and instruction, which is done on a weekly basis.


School Culture: You may work independently in your classroom, but are a part of a grade level team that meets weekly to discuss lesson planning and ensure that the students are achieving their learning objectives. The school provides a safe and secure environment for the students and staff alike, thus creating a real community feel that parents are a part of on a daily basis.


Responsibilities
The special education teacher is responsible for working with students that experience emotional, learning, and physical disabilities and are eligible for special education programs and services as determined by an IEP committee. The teacher will prepare lesson plans, use data driven instruction to gauge student learning, maintain a welcoming, safe and attractive classroom environment, and establish high standards of student behavior. The teacher will also identify students with special needs, organize student caseloads with an effective IEPC system, and establish and implement strategies to deal with disabilities. While working with these special education students, the teacher may also work with at-risk students within the general education population and in the general education classroom in conjunction with the support they are providing to students with special needs.

Program Services: NHA provides specially designed instruction developed to meet the unique needs of each child resulting from his/her disability such as, resource room, inclusion and/or pull-out services.


Accountabilities
Teachers will be held accountable for the student achievement and growth in their classroom, establishing relationships with both students and parents, and participating in all aspects of class and school planning. Candidates must be reliable and punctual in order to provide continuity and stability in the classroom. Also, we desire candidates who demonstrate moral focus and personal values to students in everyday settings. Successful candidates will be self-starters with effective classroom management skills, strong leadership capabilities, and a passion for education.

 

Qualified candidates must hold a valid teaching license issued by the State of Michigan for K-12 Special Education (SA, SB, SC, SE, SK, SL, SM and SV). Highly qualified in Reading and Math preferred.  
 
Candidates with an out-of-state license do NOT qualify for this position. 
 
Regent Park prefers candidates that have experience working with at-risk students in an urban environment.
